
DeWitt first performed on stage at the age of 13 years old. At 13 Dewitt started performing on the stage. She received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. The director advised her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. There she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt said she never met actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as secretary while at UCLA. Dewitt's portrayal of Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 series is among her most famous. She was part of the show's pilot and was eventually offered the role. Janet was also in an episode of the show The Ropers in which she starred in in 1979. DeWitt was the final actor to be featured in the series' 1984 finale. She then appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Then she ceased acting for a long time. She resumed acting with a part in a production of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. Then she appeared on the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired a 1997 episode featuring an actress who was based on her. The voice was performed in part by a different actress. The actress appeared in an episode of Cybill, and had an appearance in the penultimate episode of Living Single. A few of her TV appearances in the 2000s included Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as in addition to Call of the Wild.
