Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaker. Feminist Frequency is a web site which hosts video and commentary discussing the way women are represented in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist media critic from Canada, as well as a blogger. She is the author and executive director of Feminist Frequency, a not-for-profit educational site that examines the representation of women's roles in popular culture narratives. Determined to challenge the assumptions of women that have been portrayed in popular culture, she works on issues related specifically to the harassment of women and the other minorities of people in the online environment. With a master's in politics and sociology at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speech at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was interested in female issues as well as feminism from the age of a child. In 2009, when she was still studying at university, Sarkeesian launched the website Feminist Frequency. Her website was in the process of launching a collection of web videos examining the gender roles in video games after she was the subject of online bullying. Although the incident did not deter her instead it only bolstered her resolve as a feminist media journalist. Her notable contributions to the feminist field has been acknowledged by many prizes.
